Currently, only 1% of the social housing building maintenance workforce is female. We’re working to change that.
For the last two years, we’ve been part of the Women into Maintenance campaign. Our aim is to increase the number of women delivering skilled trades and working in leadership roles across housing maintenance.
Encouraging women into trades
We want to encourage young women at school, and women returning to work or changing careers, to consider a career as a tradeswoman.
Here are some of the ways we’re doing this:
- Earlier this year we held a 'Try a Trade' Day in Oldham so female customers could come and learn a new skill or find out how to start a career in housing maintenance. We’re now rolling this workshop out across the country to give even more of our female customers the chance to try a trade. We'll also show them how our Aspire Awards could support them.
- We helped to develop best practice guides on how to make social housing and maintenance companies more inclusive. With Mears, we launched them at the House of Commons in January 2018.
- Electricians Lisa Kelsey-Wood and Helen Colwill have completed specialist training and gone on to become Ambassador Tradeswomen. Lisa has helped host a taster session for a women’s refuge in Manchester and Helen has attended careers fairs at schools to encourage young women to think about a career in maintenance.
- Shauna Wigglesworth, our Star Awards Apprentice of the Year 2017, is helping other women into maintenance through tradeswomen focus groups. Watch this video to find out more.
